In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a six-week-old baby died as a result of bites by the family dog. The tragedy occurred on Thursday afternoon.

According to KeloNews, the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, first responders arrived at the victim’s home and found the child with several bite wounds. He was flown to the hospital via helicopter where he died as a result of his injuries.

The family dog, a Belgian Malinois, was taken to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. It has not been determined why the dog bit the child, however Sheriff Sgt. Zachary Cegelske stated it was a tragic loss for the family and a “very sad situation.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics warns parents to avoid leaving young children alone with a dog. It doesn’t matter how good the dog is – not for even a moment.

Rest in peace.

  1. Tragic loss for the family. Condolences from the Peters Puppy Pack.

Why the new parents left the baby alone with the dog is unknown. Our veterinary clinic recommended that we never leave anyone under 12 alone with the critters…….. We introduced new family members to our critters very slowly and never left anyone alone with them.

IMHO, there is jealousy and fear (in their minds the pack order is disrupted and a new pack order must be established ASAP so everyone knows their place)……… it is very likely that the dog was jealous, and at the same time, afraid of the new baby and wasn’t biting him to harm him but to assert domination over him so the baby would know that the dog outranked him in the pack order…….
