Dog rescued from life in a shed

At 14 years of age, a senior dog has finally been rescued after living his entire life in a shed. The heartbreaking story was recounted to followers of the Grateful Hearts Senior Dog Rescue Facebook page last week. The Ohio-based rescue group shared what is known about the elderly dog named Cayden:

Cayden spent his life in a shed. Yep, that’s right…this 14 ish year old dog lived alone in a shed. His teeth stick out the sides of his mouth, both sides, in un-natural positions. And you can smell the infection in his mouth. His ears…omg, I have never seen ears as bad as his. For real, one is so swollen and infected I honestly don’t know how he has survived…..his….years….in….a…..shed. He is pretty much blind if not totally….and 99% deaf.

Adding:

So how do I know he lived in a shed? Because his owner actually called about him after his legal hold expired and he was on his way to the rescue. Admitted it.

According to Cayden’s rescuers, he is “sweet, gentle, and unassuming,” and he is soaking up the first love he’s likely ever received from the people who are taking care of him.

A subsequent post outlines the impact that a life of neglect has taken on this sweet boy:

Cayden has had three long soothing baths in 2 days….and still wreaks of infection and rotting flesh and waste. I am so sorry my sweet boy. I have done nothing but weep for what you’ve been through. I am the strongest person I know, but not this time. When I think I have seen it all and the worst of the worst, along comes Cayden.
These photos my vet took tell a story in itself. His right ear is so bad, what I thought was a hematoma, is where his ear was infected so long, tissue and skin closed up the canal. Trying to clean it, ripped his tender membranes so we are having to treat with several antibiotics, drops, salves, and pray even some of it makes it down his canal. The other ear isn’t much better. The teeth….Jesus, who can watch this happening and do nothing? Only a monster.

Cayden is finally safe. He is finally receiving veterinary care, and most importantly, he is receiving love. You can follow his rescuers on Facebook at this link.

  1. I love this dog. If he was closer to Reno, Nevada I would take Caydon in a heartbeat. It would be too dangerous and traumatic for him to make the flight here. I hope he finds a new home soon. I have two cat rescues that had been living in a garage for 14 years. They appeared to share one dirty bed and were fed and allowed in and out of the garage. When they came to me, they had never seen toys or knew how to play at all. They loved their new home here and have adjusted to my other rescue cats and an 18 year old deaf chi I got at the Humane Society. If it wasn’t for the china virus I would fly across country and pick him up and bring him on the plane home with me. At least he’s warm and being loved now. Please keep us posted.
