On Wednesday morning, an adult giraffe at the Kansas City Zoo passed away after what is being described as a “tragic accident.” The zoo made the announcement via social media on Friday morning, stating:

Hamisi passed away in the early morning hours after sustaining an acute spinal cord injury in his behind-the-scenes bedroom. According to a necropsy performed by the Zoo’s veterinarians on Wednesday, Hamisi likely died instantly. The entire Zoo is heartbroken and grieving this loss.

According to the zoo, the giraffe barn was built in 1995 – over the past 24 years, it has safely housed the zoo giraffes. The zoo has stated that an internal review of the habitat is underway to “prevent any such accident from happening again.”

Staff plans to make “immediate modifications to the area” as needed – findings in the internal review will be shared with other AZA-accredited facilities in order to help prevent future incidents. The zoo stated:

Zoo staff has taken every step to ensure the safety and well being of the rest of the giraffe herd. The health and wellbeing of our 1,700 animals is always Kansas City Zoo’s top priority. We will continue to review all Zoo areas to ensure that we are providing the best facilities and care possible for all of our animals.

Hamisi joined the Kansas City Zoo after leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2016. He fathered two calves, Dixie and Maxwell, who were born in 2018.
