More than 15,000 dogs and cats are slaughtered in the most inhumane methods for China’s annual Yulin dog festival; a grim reminder of the crime and cruelty still existing in China.

According to Humane Society International, the dogs are tortured, skinned alive and cooked  even though animal activists have campaigned against the barbaric practice. Many of the people celebrating the summer solstice, believe that dog flesh is beneficial for curing diseases and sexual prowess. Thousands of local residents flock to the festival to buy, sell and trade dog meat – both dead and alive.

The Yulin dog festival begins today and is held in Guangxi and continues for the next ten days. Claire Bass, Exceuctive Director of Humane Society International stated:

“The dog meat trade in China is first and foremost about crime and cruelty. The Yulin festival is one small but distressing example of an unspeakable cruel trade run by dog thieves and sellers who routinely steal pets in broad daylight using poison darts and rope nooses, defy public health and safety laws, and cause horrendous suffering, all for a meat that most people in China don’t consume.”

Animal advocacy organizations continue to work to improve animal welfare in China. Citizens have been calling for an end to the dog meat trade as well as practical legislation to protect domestic pets against cruelty, neglect and abuse.

On Tuesday, 62 dogs destined for slaughter were saved by local Chinese activists. The rescued dogs were starving, dehydrated and in desperate need of veterinary treatment. Many of them are now under the direct care of HSI at their partner shelter in northern China. The dogs will receive critical medical attention along with fresh food and water. With love and care from staff members, they can learn to trust people again. From there, their journey to finding loving forever homes will begin.

Around 1.5 million people have signed a petition to end the Yulin festival which began ten years ago. The petition was sent to the Chinese Embassy.

  2. This so called “tradition” was started by thugs who steal pets from people’s yards and murder them in horrific manners. Many Chinese people, including my relatives, do NOT eat dog meat (& in fact rescue dogs themselves)…….
I have gone to many websites protesting this awful event and signed the petitions…….
I think if we can get 10 million or more signatures on these petitions, perhaps the Chinese government might pay more attention…..
