The word is out! Farm animals destined to be slaughtered in New York have figured out a safety route to a 250 acre sanctuary. On Tuesday afternoon, a calf on the “mooove” ran for his life on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx.
It’s not known where the ten-month-old calf came from, but rescuers rounded him up, and he was taken to the Animal Care Centers in Manhattan for a check-up. He is expected to be released to the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, New Jersey.
Named “Major Deegan” after the expressway he ran through, he definitely isn’t the first farm animal to make his daring escape.
At the beginning of the year, a cow jumped out of a double-decker slaughter truck approximately eight feet from the ground, onto Route I-80 in New Jersey and survived with only a few scratches. Just days after the cow was to have been slaughtered for hamburger meat, she delivered a healthy baby cow.
According to the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, who along with police, were able to bring the cow, now named Brianna, under control, the healthy young cow is now the mother of a baby girl named “Winter.” Mike Stura, the founder of the rescue organization, stated the owner of the cow decided to give her to the rescue, and Brianna and Winter will become part of the 70 cow herd.
Last week, a goat that had been destined to be slaughtered for food was found on a Bronx street. The lucky little guy had been wandering on Locust Avenue when police officers spotted him and quickly rounded him up. He also headed to the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue for his permanent home.
And if that doesn’t make you suspicious there might very well be a hotline to rescue for farm animals in peril, there’s more proof. Just one week ago, a lamb made his way along the Gowanus Expressway during the morning rush hour. Along came an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who helped NYPD and Good Samaritans round him up also.
And yes, the lamb went to the same sanctuary.
Following the organization’s Facebook page, a post from an animal advocate may have uncovered the secret.
