An Ohio woman who lost her hands and legs after contracting an infection from her dog’s lick has stated that she has “no intention” of getting rid of her dogs. As reported by WTKR News, Marie Trainer became extremely sick after her German shepherd pup licked a slightly infected scratch – in order to save her life, her hands and legs had to be amputated.

The deadly bacteria which ravaged Trainer’s body is capnocytophaga canimorsus, which is present in the mouths of nearly all cats and dogs. Most people do not become ill from the bacteria, but Trainer was not that fortunate. Her family writes,

It was just a random and rare occurrence that caused the perfect storm within her body resulting in the devastating illness.

Even though the bacteria from her dog nearly claimed her life, Trainer has said that she has no intention of getting rid of her dogs. In fact, after receiving permission from her doctors, Trainer’s pups have made two visits to the hospital to see her and help aid in her long and arduous healing process.

A fundraiser has been created for the Trainer family – find the GoFundMe link here.
