A Memphis, Tennessee, animal shelter is inundated following the intake of dozens of pets from one woman. According to Local Memphis, 45-year-old Mary Winstead arrived at Memphis Animal Services with a U-haul full of pets that she wanted to surrender because she didn’t have anywhere to keep them after being evicted from her home.

Upon arrival, shelter staff discovered that two of Winstead’s dogs were already dead – another died shortly after and two of the cats were deceased.  All told, 15 dogs and 13 cats were found in the U-haul truck. Now, Winstead is facing 28 counts of animal cruelty.

The sudden influx of animals has critically impacted the animal shelter. Memphis Animal Services Director Alexis Pugh told the news agency:

“When a 24 to 30 animal intake hits us unexpectedly like it did today, it puts us into crisis mode. And that’s why we need emergency help from our community.”

On Monday, the animal shelter reached out to the public for assistance:

URGENT! MAS NEEDS HELP!

Today we have taken in ANOTHER emergency intake of 25+ pets. We are already so full in every category of pet because we have taken 1200 more pets in 2019 than we had this time last year. In fact, we’ve SAVED more pets in 2019, with your help, than we had TAKEN this time last year.

Please share: All adoptions at MAS are just $10 all month long! These dogs and cats need you now.

Winstead was booked into the Shelby County Jail on $250 bond.
