A Virginia woman has been sentenced to jail time, and banned from ever owning pets again, for her abuse of dogs. As reported by WHSV News, a judge sentenced 37-year-old Emily Hubbard to a year in jail on Wednesday after being found guilty of seven misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Hubbard, of Lynchburg, was arrested in mid-September after the discovery of one dead dog and 19 dogs who were living in squalid conditions. The surviving dogs, some with visible wounds, were taken in by the Lynchburg Humane Society, which hopes to place them into new homes.

Hubbard could have been sentenced to a much longer jail sentence, but the decision was made to avoid a Grand Jury trial in order to expedite sentencing. If the case had been heard by the Grand Jury, the dogs seized from Hubbard would not have been made available for adoption until the trial was concluded.

The sentencing was considered to be the best option for this case. Commonwealth’s Attorney Leslie Fleet stated:

“She cannot have a companion animal again, so we made sure in the future, other dogs, cats or other companion animals will not have the possibility of going through the same treatment.”
