Update: Riley has been rescued!

A Vietnam veteran’s faithful service dog was with his owner on the day that the man died…and he refused to leave his side. Now, the devoted dog is locked away in isolation at a California animal control agency. Riley, a nine-year-old retriever mix, is described as “very agitated” at the facility. Can you imagine his confusion and frustration? He doesn’t know what happened to his person and he is locked up, unable to get back to the man that he loved.

Riley is in need of help – he needs a reputable rescue group to save him from an unthinkable fate. An advocate has shared what is known of Riley’s story:

He was found lying next to the man who served his country with the same distinction, days after he died. Riley was fiercely loyal and protective of this soldier and since his next of kin was unable to care for Riley, he was brought to the shelter. We must treat our veterans better-both human and canine. Please share Riley’s story. He needs a reason to live.

  1. Why is it no one in the family is ever able to take care of a loved one’s pet. If something happened to someone in my family I would take the pet in, even though I already have 3 dogs. If I wasn’t able to keep the pet then I would find a suitable new home. The poor dog wouldn’t end up in the shelter, scared to death!

    • You are so right!!! We promised my Dad on his deathbed that we would take care of his dogs. We have kept our promise. It’s not difficult…..

I don’t understand why someone would be “happy” to take the money & every “physical” item of value from a relative but leave the animals (who are absolutely precious and priceless)……..

  2. As of Aug 21, 2019, San Bernardino City Animal Shelter reports that a Rescue organization has submitted an “Intent to pull” which means he will be going to that rescue. He is safe for the time being from euthanasia.
The shelter would not provide the name of the rescue. Will update if that becomes available.

  3. What is the update for this dog, and rescue foster status? Did anyone let them know what the gentleman above, John Klem said about rescuing him?

Just curious. This story was shared on Facebook via a dog page. No one knew the update, but all were worried about him.

Could you update us? Thank you so much! ?❤

  4. This beautiful dog is scared lost everything he knew. His owner fought for our country is this how we pay them back. By dumping what he loved most his dog so very sad praying this dog gets a loving safe home
