Update on shelter as storm approaches
Spread the love

On Thursday, an animal shelter in Louisiana announced that it was operating under a “disaster proclamation,” and stated that dogs kept in outdoor kennels would be euthanized if they were not moved elsewhere before the incoming tropical storm hit. The St. Landry Parish Animal Control & Rescue has since updated Facebook followers with the latest plans and needs for the facility.

The shelter has been closed down because of the incoming storm and the facility has provided advice for area pet owners:

DUE TO WEATHER, SHELTER IS CLOSED UNTIL FARTHER NOTICE.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO PURCHASE EXTRA PET FOOD, MEDS, and WATER…
MICROCHIP your pet tomorrow at your vet, for extra precaution. Pack leashes and collars, medical records and rabies! Before you leave home!
Be safe all! Slpac OPELOUSAS, LA 337-948-6184

Plans are not fully in place for all of the kenneled pets at the facility, but various agencies are stepping up to lend a hand. On Thursday evening, the animal control facility provided information about the help which will be provided:

HSUS,Humane Society of the United States, is trying to get a flight in at 10 am tomorrow…
This is a limited window that will ALLOWS 100 pets out of here…..
Rescue Dogs Rock, is pulling 6 to be boarded.
Don’t Be Cruel is sending in a plane, picking up a pair and boarding 1.
BISSELL PET FOUNDATION is sending a van to help move pets, during the storm, and after for recovery! Thanks Ms Cathy Bissell
This is where we stand, now
We are doing the best we can. The rain is settled in…
OUR PHONE IS DOWN…
Tropical Storm Barry…is getting close…

For those near and far, there is a way to provide assistance. The animal control issued a request:

We need an unlimited amount of medium shipping crates (not wire) to help evac shelter pets. Anyone with second hand is great too. You can PayPal to [email protected]
The parish will insure your money goes to the pets of St. Landry and their care.
