Two mountain lions in Montana were tracked and killed after the death of someone’s dog. According to KPAX News, the cats were found and put down after being discovered in the Upper Rattlesnake area on Saturday.

FWP Region 2 Information and Education Program Manager Vivaca Crowser told the news agency:

There was one lion that was still in the immediate vicinity and then another one not that much further. Being able to get on a fresh trail is really important to be able to respond efficiently and being able to complete the story as to what happened.

According to Crowser, it is common for the mountain lions to enter the lower areas of the valley this time of year as they search for food.

Why were the wild animals killed?

Crowser explained the decision to kill the mountain lions who were believed to be involved in the dog attack:

“In a case like this when we had a dog fatally-injured in an area when there is other houses, there’s other pets. It’s a case we’re typically…it’s the type of response we look at if we can get the lion/lions in and kill them, it’s usually the best case in these situations because, unfortunately, we have a lion in an area where it’s a human safety situation.”

Pet owners who live in areas where wildlife reside are cautioned to be extra vigilant.

Feel free to weigh in on this situation – should wild animals be destroyed if a pet is killed? Or is it a risk that pet owners take when they live in an area where wildlife resides?

  1. So they aren’t even sure these are the right cats and they kill them? WTH You are infringing on their territory, you should keep your dogs inside of a fence and not let them just roam free in the wilderness. There are lots of predators in the country.

    • Pat M, I agree with you, if you live in the wilds then you should keep your pets inside and when they go out, you go with them, we are just killing off all the wild animals
years ago I used to watch sci-fi movies, I was appalled that there were millions of people, but No animals, to me very scary!

  2. I grew up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We had chihuahuas and VERY strict rules on their care. They were NEVER allowed outside the house unless on a 4’ lead with 2 people (usually me and one or both of my parents) walking them.

At the grocery store, post office and our community center we saw MANY posters for lost pets (the saddest poster I ever saw was for a lost 10 week old chihuahua puppy….. thinking of what probably happened to that tiny 1 pound puppy still haunts me to this day)…..

I think my parents’ strict rules saved our pets….. I suspect many of these lost pets were “taken” by predators (mountain lions, bears, hawks, eagles)……

If you live in a rural or “semi-wild” area AND have pets, YOU as their “people” are 100% responsible for their safety, health and overall wellbeing……. this means that furbabies are NEVER left outside unsupervised, NEVER outside unless on a short (4’ or 6’) lead, always fed inside the home, always sleep inside the home……. otherwise, predators (including mountain lions, bears, hawks & eagles) are opportunistic and will snatch and kill an unsuspecting pet very quickly (to us our pet is a family member, to a predator, our pet is an easy kill for a meal of fresh meat)…….

    • You are 100% correct Bunny!! I’ve been saying this for years… Many people have no common sense… it only takes seconds for something to happen!!!

  3. If you move into their habitat, and we keep driving them from their habitats into other areas to search for food, this is going to keep happening. It’s not their fault that humans are selfish, vile, and egocentric when it comes to other species. Those cats shouldn’t have been killed. It was the chance the humans took when they moved where they did, and it was their responsibility to look after their dogs properly and not leave them unattended outside.

  4. No, animals should NOT be killed because of an attack on pets! That’s the chance you take when living in their territory! When humans encroach upon wild animals’ territory there is always the chance that something might happen. Try to keep your pets at home and not let them roam.

  5. They were believed to be involved??!!!! Montana, and a few other states…. are horrible when it comes to hunting & killing… They use those nasty traps that even pets get caught in and either lose limbs or die… disgusting… “Hunters” are nothing but cowards.

  6. If you live in an area like this then you should know enough to keep your pets safe. Lions don’t know the dog is someone’s pet and they shouldn’t kill it for food. I don’t see where killing the lions was necessary.
