Two Americans were among six human injuries in the first “running of the bulls” in Pamplona’s nine-day festival. The run lasted about two minutes. One of the injured, a tourist from San Francisco, was gored in the neck and has been listed in critical condition and underwent surgery on Sunday. A 23-year-old man from Kentucky suffered “less serious” injuries.

According to the Daily Mail, the festival brings one million tourists to the Spanish City to watch the morning run. The Red Cross treated 48 people at the scene for injuries on the first day. The men, dressed in red and white, who join in the morning run chant three times asking Saint Fermin to guide and bless them.

The tradition which has been going on for centuries continues to be publicly shunned by animal advocates calling out the cruelty and inhumanity of the treatment of sentient animals. Protesters wore steer horns and sat in the streets outlined with dead bulls in protest.

For seven days, eight bulls are released to run through the street to the bullring. The animals then suffer even more brutal treatment and death in bullfights. Sunday’s opening bull fights were interrupted with animal advocates who streamed into the arena of the first bull fight when a bull was speared multiple times and died in agony.

Not much sympathy has been rounded up for the humans.

  1. NO SYMPATHY–THEY DESERVE TO “DIE”! I hope and pray someday the situation will REVERSE–AND THE ANIMALS CAN GET THEIR “JUST” REVENGE!
