To my family: ‘Don’t you care I am dying today at a shelter?’

A family dog’s final hours are spent sitting in his kennel – invisible and hidden from the public. Panko is dying today.

“Why mom and dad? Why don’t you care I’m going to die in a couple of hours?,” Panko’s sad face reflects despair as a brokenhearted advocate tries to share the dog’s fate slated for later Saturday afternoon.

Sadly, Panko is just a dog – that is to the general public and especially to the New York City Animal Care Centers in Manhattan. He is the most likely type of dog to be euthanized – he’s black, middle aged and a male. But there is so much more to Panko, that after this afternoon will no long matter to anyone.

“… behind that sad face is that he is friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable with people. He lived happily with a teenager and a cat. Was not bothered when his toys, food or treats are taken away. By all accounts he was just a good boy who had a family that threw him away and today he will die for it.”

Planko has no staff notes, no video, no volunteer comments and no voice.

Can this dog be saved in time? (Notes suggest Panko may have been a victim of cruelty. He was surrendered after landlord restrictions.

“Hello, my name is Panko. My animal id is #61823. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.
Weight: 55.2 lbs
Rated Rescue Only – Fear”

Panko is at risk; New Hope only determination, for behavioral reasons. Panko has remained fearful at the care center and has displayed high levels of dog reactivity with the potential to re-direct onto the handler. Panko would be best suited for placement with a New Hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Panko has a growth which may need follow up care.

  1. I am in California but rooting for Panko!!! We have 2 black dogs and they are both very sweet and loving snuggle-buddies (both are rescues). I can’t understand why people think black dogs are not the same as dogs with other coat colors…… It’s the disposition that matters, NOT the hair color!!!
