In Covington, Louisiana, three women have been arrested for intentionally sawing off their dog’s back legs. The women have not been publicly identified, but include the mother, her 17-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old friend of the daughter’s.

Buddy was discovered in a mobile home park in Slidell; his owners told investigators that their dog had been paralyzed in his rear legs after being shot in early 2019. He was discovered lying in the rain and was rushed to the Lakeshore Veterinarian Hospital by a Good Samaritan. There he received a blood transfusion. Two bullets had been lodged in his back but had not been the cause of the dog’s paralysis. Buddy did have use of his nubs

The owner’s daughter  claimed Buddy had been shot in February causing paralysis, and the dog’s legs fell off because the bandages were too tight – she claimed the bandages were to keep the dog’s legs from becoming sore as he dragged them.

The mother has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty for not providing medical attention for the dog. The daughter has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty and has since admitted she sawed off the dog’s back legs. Her teenage friend has also been charged with animal cruelty after admitting to abandoning the dog in the mobile park.

The veterinarian in charge of Buddy has stated he thought the dog’s legs had been “maliciously removed” possibly with a hacksaw.

Many thanks to In Defense of Animals’ Doll Stanley for her persistence following this disturbing act of animal cruelty. Stanley, who operates Hope Animal Sanctuary in Grenada, Mississippi, met with 22nd Judicial District Attorney Warren Montgomery with a letter containing more than 12,000 signatures supporting the prosecution of the mother, her daughter and the daughter’s friend for the heinous torture of the dachshund-chihuahua. Prosecutors have assured the public the investigation continues and they “will not tolerate violence in any form, whether it is against a human or animal.”

Buddy was cared for by Dante’s Hope Animal Rescue East. He now has his own Facebook page, Buddy the little dog that survived.

He now has his own wheelchair, but sometimes enjoys life just as it is. Check out his latest Christmas fun:
