In Paterson, New Jersey, a three-month-old puppy is recovering after reportedly having been lit on fire with a blowtorch. A witness stated he discovered the tiny pit bull puppy and another dog lit on fire about a week ago.

According to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, the Good Samaritan who found the puppy, dubbed Tyler, tried to care for him for a week, but the injuries were too severe and the puppy’s condition worsened. On Sunday evening, the Tyler was brought to the Oradell Animal Hospital.

“We have confirmed medically that these events are likely. Tyler’s wounds are burn wounds. Doctors had to cut away dead skin in order to treat his wounds. There is new skin growth in some areas, but in other areas doctors expect skin to die and the wounds to get worse before they get better, necessitating an extended hospitalization and treatment. Tyler has lost protein, which is common with burn victims. A plasma transfusion is being considered based on how he recovers. For now, he is on fluids to support his tiny body. We all share the sentiments of our executive director, Megan Brinster, “This one has disturbed me to my core.

It is inconceivable that someone could do this to two living, breathing, feeling beings. Our hearts break knowing that Tyler was found critically injured and burned and his condition worsened before he was given relief. It is even more painful to imagine the fate of the other dog that was lit on fire.”

The incident is alleged to have occurred in an area known for dog fighting. Other dogs have been rescued from that general area in the past.

The location or the condition of the second dog is not known. Anyone with information is asked to contact the shelter at 201.337.5180 or the Patterson Police Department.
