In eastern Thailand, a one-month-old baby elephant died on Friday after suffering a serious injury when a hunter tethered her by her leg and abandoned her in a forest. The infant was discovered by villagers in Rayong, and despite all veterinarian treatment and intervention, the baby dubbed Baitong did not survive.
According to the Daily Mail, when villagers found her tied to a fence with a rope embedded to the bone of her ankle, Baitong could barely stand. It is not known how long she had been without her mother and able to nurse. Baby elephants are dependent on their mothers until two-years of age.
When rescued on December 18, it was determined the only way the baby elephant could survive was to amputate her foot. The infection had seeped deep into her bone and because she was undernourished and weak, amputating her foot had been the only way she could have had a chance to survive.
After surgery, Baitong had slowly seemed to have been recovering, but last week while playing, she suddenly collapsed. Veterinarians administered intravenous fluids, medication and oxygen, but her body had given up.
“We are all close to her and very sad to see her go. Hope the death of Baitong will remind all hunters that animals are innocent and they do not deserve any of this at all,” Nathanong Panpech, one of the veterinarians who treated the baby elephant stated.
Rest in peace little one. You never had a chance to live.
