A Harris County man has been charged with felony animal cruelty after he was allegedly caught on video tossing a cat into a swimming pool located at an apartment complex on Cypress Station Drive.

According to The Chron, Javonte Darion Alexander, 22, was seen on surveillance video violently picking up a cat and throwing it into the pool. In addition he was seen hitting the cat in the head with a shoe as well as his hands as the cat desperately tried to get out of the pool. Later in the video, he held the cat under water. The disturbing incident occurred on September 7.

“After a period of time and several of these torturous acts, ****** observes Alexander grab the cat from the pool, walk over to the side of the pool and console the cat … and attempting to gain its trust,” according to the report. “Then, Alexander intensely throws the cat back into the pool and walks off.”

The cat was able to crawl out of of the pool and lie on the ground. The suspect then re-entered pool area, grabbed the cat and carried the cat away.

Alexander was able to be identified after he was seen entering the facility in a Cadillac with temporary plates. The plates were traced back to Alexander.

Alexander was arrested on September 25 by the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He is currently out on a $10,000 bond.

“The video is difficult to watch,” Constable Alan Rosen stated. “Anyone who tortures an animal should be held accountable. This cat was defenseless. Our society should not stand for such cruelty to animals.”

It is not known what happened to the cat. If convicted, Alexander faces 2-10-years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

The Constable’s Office reports that it is possible Alexander may have abused other animals previously.

“If you recognize him or know about any other cases he might have been involved with, you can call the Precinct One Animal Cruelty Hotline at (832) 927-1659. You can always report additional cases of animal cruelty of any kind to the same number or by Calling the HSPCA animal cruelty tip line at (713) 869-7722.”
