A Tennessee man has been accused of beating a dog and then dousing it with gasoline and setting it on fire. Cody Shay Townsend, 29, was arrested on Monday and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, aggravated burglary and trespassing.
According to WtopNews, Townsend had been burning stumps in a yard when the stray dog wandered over to him. Benton County Sheriff Ken Christopher stated the dog then confronted him as he tried to break into a home; that’s when Townsend began beating the dog with a hammer and a baseball bat. He then pushed the dog under the stump, poured gasoline on it and set the pup on fire.
The dog survived the attack and was taken to a veterinarian but may lose his eye. He also suffered from burns all over his body.
Townsend’s bond has been set at $25,000, and he is currently being held at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
