In Tallahassee, Florida, the owner of a puppy has been charged with animal cruelty and neglect after authorities accused the man of severely breaking his puppy’s leg. David Rittman, 28, was arrested on Thursday after an examination of the puppy revealed the animal had been a victim of extreme neglect and cruelty.
According to WtxlNews, Tallahassee police officers responded to Rittman’s home on Flanders Boulevard earlier in February, where a witness told them them heard Rittman beating and kicking the puppy on several occasions. The previous night, the witness heard the puppy cry out in pain, and when she looked outside, she spotted Rittman standing over the pup talking to another person about “messing up” the puppy’s leg.
During the police interview, Rittman claimed he didn’t have the money to take the puppy to a veterinarian and that she had been bitten by a spider on her neck after her leg had been caught in a fence. Authorities seized the dog; a veterinarian found the puppy’s leg had been fractured and the animal infested with intestinal parasites and worms.
Recordings of the puppy crying out in pain were also turned over to police. Rittman, 28, was taken to the Leon County Detention Center.
