A dog, stolen from her family’s yard in Miami, was found in a snow-covered ditch nearly two years later…and almost 2000 miles from home. According to multiple sources, Cedar, a German shepherd, was just a puppy when someone stole her from the  Peterson family’s yard in May 2017.

Fast forward to 2019 – the now grown dog was discovered by deputy Marshal Steve Ryan in a snow-covered ditch in Hugo, Colorado – nearly 2,000 miles from where she was last seen by her family. According to NBC News, her family learned that she was alive thanks to an embedded microchip.

When Cedar was found, she was hurt and malnourished, but amazingly, alive – her stunned owner, Tamara Peterson, told the Miami Herald:

“I immediately cried. I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock. It’s almost two years to the day.”

Cedar was returned to her family thanks to the Wings of Rescue non-profit charity organization. On April 20, the agency wrote:

Reunited and it feels so good!!! Cedar has landed! Stolen two years ago from her home in Florida, Cedar was found injured, covered with snow by a heroic Colorado policeman. He took her to his house and tended to her injuries. Then he discovered a microchip. Wings of Rescue, in partnership with Cloud Nine Rescue Flights Humane Society of Broward County and GreaterGood.org flew her home – and delivered 35 at-risk puppies from our friends at the Humane Society of North Texas! Thank you to pilot Ted Dupuis @Cathi Perez and all who donated to make Cedar’s family whole again!

Always ensure that your pet has identification, including an ID tag with current contact information and a micochip that is registered with the owner’s most recent address and phone number.

  1. How horrible to have your pup stolen like this and for two years not know what happened to her. It proves the value of a microchip and keeping it up to date even thought your dog is lost/stolen. I’m glad that miracles sometimes do happen.
