A tragic accident this month resulted in six elephant deaths in Thailand’s Khao Yai National Park. As reported by BBC News, a baby elephant fell over a waterfall and the other elephants died while trying to rescue the calf.
The amazing, albeit heartbreaking, show of family devotion is not unusual in elephants. According to the news agency, eight elephants died in a similar manner back in 1992. The waterfall in the park has been temporarily closed, reports the Guardian.
Two elephants, who were found on a nearby cliff, were moved to a safe area by officials.
Khao Yai was opened as the country’s first national park in 1962. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife and approximately 300 elephants that reside there.
