A Maryland puppy mill operator, who faced nearly 100 animal cruelty charges, has been given a short jail sentence after accepting a plea deal. According to multiple sources, 70-year-old Susan Murphy will spend just 60 days behind bars after her sentence was reduced to just 26 animal cruelty charges.
As reported by WBOC News, Murphy was charged with 96 counts of animal cruelty after investigators found more than 300 small dogs at her home in 2016. The dogs, mostly Pomeranians, were part of a puppy mill operation which Murphy was running from her home in Eden.
At the time that Murphy’s property was raided by the authorities, dogs were found to be living in deplorable conditions, with “mounds of feces” on the property and cramped living conditions. Murphy has stated that she is “sorry” for how she cared for the dogs and blames the situation on her own abuse by her husband.
In addition to jail time, Murphy is sentenced to 10 months of at home detention and three years of supervised probation.
