Shelter seeks hospice foster for dying dog who has weeks to live

A New Jersey animal shelter is hoping to find a loving home for a dying dog who has just weeks to live. The dog’s name is Autumn and she has advanced bone cancer. On Friday afternoon, the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge explained:

We were shocked and devastated by the x-rays of Autumn’s leg. She has bone cancer in her knee, which has already metastasized to her chest. Autumn has only weeks to live.

Autumn comes from a sad past. According to the shelter, she lived outdoors and was unsocialized. Her family surrendered her to a kill facility when she began to limp, and then rescue agencies shied away because she wasn’t socialized. But Autumn never seemed to give up hope that someone might love her. The shelter writes:

Autumn didn’t give up hope. She smiled and wagged her tail with each visitor that walked by, as she had for 7 long years, waiting for someone to free her or give her a kind word or a gentle pat on the head.

After staff with Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge discovered Autumn, and noticed her hopeful demeanor, they were moved to pull her from the “kill” facility – and she was rushed to a veterinarian where the devastating truth about Autumn’s condition became apparent.

The dream for Autumn

The shelter writes of their hopes for this cancer-stricken dog:

Autumn likely only has weeks to enjoy her happy ending, but we at RBARI see it as a happy ending nonetheless. After living a lifetime outdoors and spending several weeks in the shelter, Autumn will now be doted on and surrounded with love. We are seeking a hospice foster or even a foster who can bring our beautiful girl home for some special sleepovers. If you can’t foster, please consider making a donation towards her medical care and needs.
