Shelter dog’s Christmas wish goes unanswered

One shelter dog’s Christmas wish has gone unanswered for the fourth year in a row. Elmer has been at the Animal Welfare Society in New Milford, Connecticut for four of his five years. He has watched many other dogs go home to families while he is left behind; watching and waiting, wondering when it will be his turn.

Sadly, Elmer has been dealt a bad hand since he was a puppy. He lived for just under a year with a family before being relinquished to the shelter.  He was forced to live outside the entire time. When he arrived at the shelter, he was very skinny and starved for affection. According to staff and volunteers, Elmer was so thrilled to finally be shown love and affection that he split his tail from wagging it too much.

Everyone in the shelter fell in love with this sweet boy, and he soon became a favorite.  Elmer loves his blankets, toys, and he also has a mischievous streak.  He’s been known to greet the mail carrier while holding a volunteer’s umbrella in his mouth.

Although Elmer is a large dog, he loves to sit on laps and get petted and scratched.  Due to his size and enthusiastic nature, he would do best in a home with a fenced in yard and as the only pet. Elmer does suffer from sensitive skin and a sensitive stomach, so he needs to be given special treats that won’t upset either.

But first and foremost, he will need a loving family who will have patience with him.  Because he has lived in a shelter environment for four years, it may take him some time to settle into home life. He will need a lot of patience and understanding while he overcomes his apprehension.

The staff and volunteers at the Animal Welfare Society have tried everything possible to make Elmer’s wish for a forever home come true. He had his picture put on a mock-up magazine cover and even had his photo on a billboard in Times Square. They even created a Facebook page for him https://www.facebook.com/Elmerpup/

Still, no interest in him.

Every Christmas Eve Elmer watches the skies very carefully hoping Santa Claus will hear his plea and make his wish come true. Every year it has gone unanswered. As he settles into his kennel with his favorite toy and blanket waiting and hoping, sleep finally overtakes him.

He drifts off with the words of that classic Christmas song playing in his mind; “I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams….”
