A mistake led to the “accidental” killing of a stray dog at an Oklahoma animal shelter, and the man who found him is upset because he intended to offer the dog a home if an owner did not come forward. According to WEARTV,  Adam Cooper turned the stray dog over to the Tulsa Animal Welfare and let staff know that he would give the dog a home if the true owner didn’t show up.

But, the dog, dubbed Nixon, is gone – killed because the notes indicating that an adopter was waiting, were not input into the system. Cooper told the news agency what he said to the shelter, “I gave them my business card and told them to please call me if they were going to put him to sleep.” The dog’s finder even made a donation and pleaded with the staff to keep the dog safe – he claims that he was promised a safe period of hold time, telling the news agency, “They told me he was good until at least February 4th.”

Cooper’s friend, Jan Sullivan, also let the shelter know that Nixon had someone waiting – she said, “There were notes in the system that he was going to be adopted, I was assured he was going to be.”

But the dog wasn’t safe – in fact, when Sullivan called the shelter on January 31, she was informed that he had already been put down. She told the news agency what the shelter’s explanation was, “Saying that it was human error, they made a mistake, the notes didn’t get into the system.”

The shelter is a “full capacity” and has stated that euthanasia is “inevitable.”

Rest in peace Nixon.

  1. DAmn! DAmn! DAmn! Why doe these things happen! It’s too late for the dog, apologies and “human error” just don’t cut it-They are unacceptable!

  2. I just found a puppy on Saturday. Took it to the pound to be scanned, no chip. They asked me to leave the pup, they would not kill it. And this right here is the exact reason I did not leave the puppy. I already have 3 rescues, and would have had 4, if I would not have found her family. I know our shelter is full, and a no kill but there is no guarantee she would not have been put down. She was an older dog, 11 years old. Please if you find a dog keep it in hopes you can locate the family. I posted on our local lost and found and people shared, by the next morning her family was found and I was taking her home. She was already stressed, and I knew the pound was not where she needed to be. Also you can post and ask for a foster. Check your local lost and found animals, those people are amazing.

  3. Shelters want people to adopt the strays they take in and here this dog’s founder specifically stated he wanted to adopt this dog after the holding time, and no one bothered to enter that into their system? What idiots do they have working there. This man obviously felt a connection to this dog and I am sure the dog responded to the man. What a sad situation all around for dog and man. Hope this man finds a dog that he will connect with like he did this guy.

  4. Wait…. If they have a stray hold period, and wouldn’t allow him to adopt until February 4, WHY THE HELL was Nixon killed by January 31???????????

Do these idiots even follow the law, or is it the ‘he’s just a dog’ mentality? That certainly explains why those notes never made it into the system, doesn’t it?

These ‘accidents’ happen far too often. If you’re in a position of having control of life or death over someone who has no opportunity to get free of you, then YOU have the responsibility to make certain you do everything possible that there are no slip ups like this. Those responsible should be fired the first time this happens. Killing someone isn’t just a ‘clerical error’.

  5. The NOTES didn’t get Put into the SYSTEM!!!! Bull shit!!! HOW MANY DOG’S HAS THIS OKLAHOMA SHELTER DONE THIS TO!!! No one will ever know!! It HAS BECOME APPARENT THAT OKLAHOMA IS ANOTHER (TEXASs, NORTH CAROLINA) AND AREN’T VERY VESTED IN providing shelter, comfort , and finding new homes, This dog was to SIMPLY PUT IT (FUC*ED) and his LIFE GONE WHEN the Gentleman took him into the Shelter… They DID NOT GIVE one Health Shit!!! about him finding a home & Believe ME I doubt they have ONE OUNCE OF REMORSE OR GUILT!!!

  6. This is the worse kind of “accident”! I can’t imagine the heartbreak this man feels wanting to adopt this precious dog and the shelter does this! Mistake? This is more than a mistake! I hope whoever did this “human mistake” is able to live with themselves! You would think they would have been happy to make sure a stray dog got a good home!

  7. Precious treasure, your life was stolen from you (& your life mattered). I am absolutely heartbroken for your death. So sorry that humans failed you in every way possible……

Please look for MacKitty in Heaven and he will welcome you into his snuggle buddies group. You can RIP amongst his loving friends……..

In some so-called shelters, the staff is “needle happy”….. which is another way of saying “callous, cruel & indifferent to suffering”…….. I truly believe that anyone who is deliberately cruel to others (people or animals) will burn in Hell forever for their cruelty…..

There are some very serious questions that must be answered.
Disgusting and cruel to not thoroughly update intake records and verify situation BEFORE euthanasia. This is not a proper shelter (& I have no doubt this awful murder of “animals who will be adopted by their finders once the stray hold expires” has happened before).
The attitude towards animals speaks volumes about whether these POS shelter employees even value lives…..
    Sad beyond words……

  8. THIS IS BEYOND CRIMINAL! THE SHELTER NEEDS A SERIOUS INVESTIGATION. THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW HOW MANY MORE INNOCENT DEFENSELESS ANIMALS ARE AT RISK!

  9. Okay I give up how the fuck do you manage to slaughter an animal that was going to be adopted and call it an accident??? That is no fucking accident. That is a huge fucking mistake. The notes were put into the system???? That’s an unforgivable mistake. The animal was killed that’s beyond a mistake. Fuck everyone who was involved in this tragedy.
