On Friday, the Suffolk County SPCA detectives charged a Central Islip man with animal cruelty. Dashawn Belcher, 25, is accused of leaving his dog in a crate in a dark basement with food, water or veterinary care.

Belcher faces charges of misdemeanor animal cruelty. The sweet dog, an emaciated pit bull type has a body score of 2/9, had untreated sores and lived in a metal crate filled with feces and urine in the dark basement.

The dog has been transferred to an animal hospital where she is currently receiving care for her injuries.

Chief Gross stated that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County. Anyone witnessing incidents of animal cruelty or neglect are urged to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631.382.7722.
