Pigs to be slaughtered

Pigs raised at Farsley Farfield Primary school in Leeds, West Yorkshire, will be slaughtered this summer in an effort to teach students about the food chain. Though the kids have known that the pigs are not pets, and that they would eventually be killed, there are many people upset over what will be happening.

As reported by Metro U.K., the plan to kill the pigs was hatched by Peter Harris – a vegetarian teacher at the school. Harris explained his thought process to the news agency:

“I think that we are raising awareness of the meat industry, and some of the issues around animal welfare and sustainability. I don’t think that we are desensitising the children, I suggest that our children will be more knowledgeable and sensitive to animal welfare than most of their peers.”

The pigs have enjoyed a better life than the majority of livestock pigs held at factory farms – and they have been granted a longer life than a commercially harvested pig – but is that good enough?

Is Harris’ lesson humane? Do you believe that this will help, or hurt, his cause? Should kids be taught where their food comes from? Please feel free to leave a comment expressing your thoughts and opinions.

  1. It’s the wrong way to teach the children. There is too much of a chance that the children will be traumatized by this act. They have been emotionally involved with the pigs and it will be a terrible tragedy to Kill them. It will probably stop them from eating pork, may even make them vegetarian, which is a good thing, but it’s the wrong way to do it.

    • You said what I was thinking….. There are numerous books and videos available to teach all about the meat processing industry, egg industry, dairy industry and animal cruelty. I suggest that these resources be used instead…..

  2. This is just horrifying! NO NO NO. I have been a vegetarian for the past 21 years. I don’t condone this whatsoever. Most of the children will be traumatized by the event.
Children do need to be taught where their food comes from but this is just too close for the lesson to be useful.
And what jackleg who proclaims to be a vegetarian actually would condone this, much less a teacher?

  3. This is crazy ???! I hope they decide in the end not to do this! There’s enough pigs slaughtered already! Why not let these pigs go to a sanctuary? They can watch videos on pigs being slaughtered!! Please don’t kill these pigs!
