In Camarillo, California, an eight-year-old American bulldog named Ribeye stole our hearts one week ago. He had been surrendered to the Camarillo Animal Shelter after his owner moved away.

A popular photo showing Ribeye carrying a pink blanket in his mouth made us cry. It was originally reported the blanket had been left behind for the dog by his previous owner, however it was later clarified by Ventura County Animal Services  the blanket had been provided for Ribeye by the shelter.

On Saturday, Ribeye found his family; he was adopted. He remained at the shelter to undergo neutering surgery scheduled for Monday, October 14. On Sunday evening Ribeye died.

“Due to the sudden nature of his passing, our veterinary team performed a necropsy to determine the cause of his death. They discovered he died of complications due to an underlying blood disorder. It is rare to have an animal die in our care and we are heartbroken by his passing,” the Ventura County Animal Services posted on their Facebook page.

Rest in peace Ribeye. We were so close to giving you the great life you deserved.
