An officer from the Richland County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina rescued a starving dog on Thursday morning that had been left tied to a tree for the last three months. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were called and asked to help in  this heartbreaking case of abandonment, abject cruelty and neglect.

“The sheriff ‘s office went out to serve an arrest warrant today and came across this poor emaciated soul, starved near to death, a prisoner out on that huge chain tied to that tree with that filthy blanket,” Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the rescue organization posted on their Facebook page this morning.

Even in the sweltering heat, the dog had been left with no shelter, no food and no water. The dog’s story, however gets more tragic as it had been reported neighbors knew about him and never called animal control.

“They told the sheriff that they occasionally threw him some KFC!!!. This is so sickening and so sad. They knew he was next door suffering, slowly dying & that’s the extent of their efforts!”

The question remains why anyone wouldn’t call animal control? They said today the dog started to whimper.

The sheriff deputies have transported the dog, now dubbed Maddox, to the rescue’s veterinarian partner. His condition is critical. Updates to follow.
