A Washington state wildlife center is offering a $1,000 reward for information about an injured bat who was found with a fishing hook piercing his cheek. On Wednesday, the Sarvey Wildlife Center provided details about the suspected case of animal cruelty.

In a Facebook post, the wildlife center recounted details of the disturbing situation:

Sarvey Wildlife Care Center received an injured bat at 4:00 pm on July 23, 2019. The adult, male bat was discovered hanging from fishing line which had been tied to a rock and lodged into a dock. There was a fishing hook intentionally embedded into his cheek.

According to the press release, the bat was found at Sunset Park in Lake Stevens, Washington on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 23, 2019. An exam revealed that the bat was dehydrated and “extremely stressed.” After being treated for pain and infection, the bat was transferred to Happy Valley Bats for continued care.

The wildlife center hopes that the person responsible can be found and prosecuted. The agency writes:

Due to the disturbing circumstances under which this bat was discovered, Sarvey Wildlife Care Center is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of the perpetrator.

We ask that anyone with accurate and timely information regarding this illegal, senseless and cruel act contact Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) with details. If it is determined your information was helpful in solving this case, and helping to hold the parties responsible accountable, you could be entitled to the reward.

Tips can be reported to WDFW WildComm Dispatch at (360) 902-2936
