A reward is being offered after an abandoned dog, left tied to a tree near Interstate 84 in East Fishkill, New York, died. The dog, dubbed Pesci, was found on July 24 by a state Department of Transportation crew, and he was euthanized two weeks later because of injuries sustained when he was abandoned.

As reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal, the dog was doing well initially, but earlier this week he developed breathing problems which are suspected to be the result of him being abandoned in a choke collar. Dutchess Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Executive Director Lynne Meloccaro told the news agency:

“He seemed perfectly fine when we got him, he was happy and playful we were smitten with him. For us, it was a huge shock because he seemed to be so happy and he suddenly developed breathing problems. Until yesterday I thought he was going to pull through.”

When Pesci began to struggle on Sunday night, he was taken to a veterinary hospital where he was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea and a possible tear to his esophagus; though he was provided with care, the damaged proved to be insurmountable and he was euthanized the following day.

A reward is being offered for information leading to whoever abandoned this dog. On Friday, the New York State Humane Association wrote:

Anyone with information regarding the possible history of this animal or its owners is asked to please contact the New York State Police at State Police in East Fishkill at (845) 677-7300. Please reference case# 9050766. NYSHA is offering a reward of $1,000 for arrest & conviction of person abandoning this dog.

  1. I see a lot of your articles and I just have to tell you you need to stop using the word euthanasia where it doesn’t apply. The definition of euthanasia is the putting down of an animal suffering. Animals killed due to over breeding and thus lack of space in the shelter are not suffering. These animals are killed plain and simple. The word euthanasia is used to pacify the public. It makes it seem like it’s not so bad. When you do an article in the animal is put down because the shelter is full not because he was hit by a car you need to use the word killed. Otherwise you’re just adding to the complacency of what is being done to these animals. And I’m not blaming the shelters they are just a direct reflection of the public. Putting your head in the sand is not the way to go
