A self-proclaimed dog rescuer has been arrested and 40 dogs were seized from her home in Memphis, Tennessee. As reported by WREG, Bonnie Maher-Hazel is facing multiple charges for the neglect of 40 dogs who were being kept in deplorable conditions at her home.
Memphis Animal Services Director Alexis Pugh stated:
“This is the worst I’ve ever seen. I walked in last night and saw animals in conditions that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.”
Maher-Hazel told officials that she ran Save Our Shepherds. The rescue agency’s mission states:
Our Mission is to find loving forever homes for adoptable German Shepherd Dogs rescued from shelters, strays and owner turn-ins. We provide needed medical care, training and rehabilitation to neglected, abused or sick German Shepherd Dogs until they are ready for adoption. All SOS dogs are spayed/neutered prior to adoption, micro-chipped, brought up-to-date on all vaccinations, and heartworm tested
Now the dogs who were living at Maher-Hazel’s residence are in need of rehabilitation from the ‘care’ that they received while under Maher’s supervision. Officials found dogs living in cages that were piled high with feces and urine; one dog had chewed off its own tail.
The dogs were taken to Memphis Animal Services – the agency is overwhelmed and is asking for assistance. In a Facebook post, the agency stated:
We have a cruelty case tonight with 35 dogs coming in to an already full shelter. We need help! Can you foster a dog for a few days or more? If so PLEASE come in tomorrow during our adoption hours of 12-4 p.m.

It’s always a sad day when dogs have to be “rescued” from someone who is supposed to be a rescuer. What happened, did she get over her head? I truly hope that was the case but she should have gotten help. I hope these precious pups will all find good homes. I wish I lived closer I would be more than willing to foster.
