Rescued: Dog lived on chain in misery while his tumor grew

In a Texas community where no one seems to care much about neglected dogs, Smokey lived on a chain in misery while a tumor on his head and neck grew. As the lump grew to the size of a melon, and Smokey could barely hold his head erect, his owners still continued to ignore their dog. He was left chained, and the closest he ever got to a home was looking in the window.

On Friday, Smokey was surrendered to a kill shelter in the most egregious condition.

“Smokey outside on his chain looking in, as his owner did NOTHING but watch him cry in pain for months. They also failed t o feed him and he’s emaciated with every rib showing,” wrote Stacey Silverstein, the co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC – the nonprofit animal welfare organization that saved Smokey’s life earlier this morning.

Tragically, the shelter where Smokey was surrendered has no authority for enforce criminal action against the dog’s owners; the laws in Texas in support of companion animals is too lenient.

“When he was surrendered today to a kill shelter in this horrific condition, they failed to removed the thick chain and just left it on as you can see in the videos,” Stacey continued. “No remorse, no respect, and not one ounce of humility for Smokey – a living being who breathes and walks this earth just like them.”

Smokey has been rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital where he will receive expert medical care. His prognosis is unknown and will need a consultation at a specialty hospital and surgery to remove the huge tumor on his head weighing him down.
