An adorable puppy was rescued after he was found next to his dead mother’s body in the debris of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s compound earlier this week. Photojournalist Fared Alhor found the frightened puppy after  hearing there were animals left near the destroyed site and rode out on his motor bike on a four hour trip to rescue them.

According to Metro, Alhor found the puppy standing next to the body of his mother whimpering, but then allowed himself to be picked up and nuzzled into Alhor’s arms. The next stop was to a veterinarian for a checkup and vaccinations.

The puppy has been named Bobe, and on Wednesday Alhor tweeted the dog was doing well and decided to adopt him even though money is tight. When asked why he risked his own life entering the dangerous area to save a puppy, he stated:

“For humanity. I am a media activist and photographer for the Syrian Revolution. I work for humanity. I need some support in order to secure food and a new doghouse for him. He will have a good life and we will settle down, me and him.”
