One lucky puppy from Scottsdale, Arizona plucked away by an owl on Friday and then dropped on a local golf course, is recovering from her scary experience.

According to the Foothills Animal Rescue, the 12-week-old puppy named Latte, had been in her foster family’s backyard with three other dogs when the puppy wandered away to the side of the home. At that moment, an owl swooped down, plucked the puppy up and flew away.

What has to have been the luckiest puppy in Scottsdale happened 12-hours later. Golfers at Troon Golf Club found the injured pooch under a tree near the 16th hole. Although she was dehydrated and weak with puncture wounds in her head from the owl’s talons, Latte survived; and after spending the weekend at the veterinary hospital, has been reunited with her foster family.

On Tuesday, Latte’s update and her story were posted on the rescue organization’s Facebook page.

“Let me tell you, being picked up and carried off by an owl is no fun, but they tell me I’m making a speedy recovery. I still tire quickly and have a pretty “ruff” (see what I did there?) cough, but overall I am feeling fine…”

Many thanks for the donations on Arizona Gives Day. All of Latte’s medical bills have been paid and there are extra funds to help other dogs and cats at the shelter.

  1. I would NEVER leave a puppy, kitten, “small breed” dog or child unattended ANYWHERE……

So glad this precious little treasure was saved and will recover. I hope the family will NEVER allow this precious little treasure to be outside alone again, ever…..

One should NEVER leave furbabies outside alone. Terrible things can happen very quickly……. ALWAYS supervise tiny (10 pounds or under) whenever they are outside (either on a short (~3’ or 4’) leash or in a roofed metal pet pen).

We have actually had hawks sit on the roof of our 2’ tall metal pet pen trying to get to the chihuahuas inside of it. (It took me armed with a metal baseball bat and a garden hose “on full blast” to get the hawk to leave & then s/he circled our yard for over 1.5 hours whilst I sat on the ground next to the pet pen trying to keep the chihuahuas calm)……. I had thought the dogs would be safe in the roofed pen whilst I did yard work in our orchard……

In our area we have coyotes and racoons in our neighborhood who will commonly snatch pets. In addition, we have large birds of prey (eagles and hawks) who migrate 2/year. Dogs and cats are not accustomed to “surveying the skies” and are often “snatched as a “free meal””…… to a large bird of prey, a dog or cat is “x pounds of easy food”, not a “treasured family member”……. Awful to think about, but it happens so frequently in our area…..

Pet parents MUST protect furbabies from aerial predators, land predators AND, most dangerous: human predators……. Scary world we live in…….
