Nearly 30,000 people have signed a petition calling for the punishment of tourists in the beach town of Chalkida, Greece who threw stones at a swordfish that had swam into shallow water to give birth.

The disturbing video showing the attack went viral on social media. A crowd of beach going tourists could be seen gathered at the shore while the panicky fish had been swimming furiously around trying her best to avoid the abuse as several men tried to grab her and others hurled stones and other objects.

The swordfish was finally able to swim away, however the men continued to throw more stones at her.

“A minute after the incident with the bathers, a lifeguard of the harbor found it dead,” said a spokesperson for the Chalkida Port Authority, according to The Independent.

A petition entitled,  “AGAINST ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF SUFFICIENCY IN EVIA” includes the following request:

“We ask for a fine to everyone involved or to the owner of the beach (if it is private) as well as to the port that allegedly was there and did not intervene.
We know of course that this is not a protected species, but our “voice” must be heard so that the unacceptable “mob” behavior towards every weak creature finally stops…”
