In St. Petersburg, Florida, a St. Petersburg Police Department K9 and a deputy are recovering after being shot by a suspect running away during a traffic stop on Friday morning.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the incident occurred at 1:50 a.m. when a patrol officer pulled over a vehicle driven by Elijah Johnson, 23. Johnson fled from his car, and at that point Officer Greg Shone and his canine partner began to track the suspect.

A short time later, the suspect fired shots at  Sgt. David Stang, who was in his vehicle at 3rd Ave.South and 27th St. Sgt David Stang was shot in the shoulder. The officer was rushed to the hospital and is in satisfactory condition. K9 Titan, a four-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois, was shot in the leg and underwent surgery.

The suspect was later found dead with what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound near 3rd Ave S. and 26th St. It doesn’t appear that any deputy or officer fired a weapon.  Johnson was just released from prison and has a lengthy criminal history, including drug possession, armed burglary, and grand theft auto.

K9 Titan is expected to recover.

Check out his video. Officer Shone and K9 Titan have been together for the last three years and their love for each other is obvious:
