Police K9 died day after collapsing during training

A police K9 died one day after collapsing during training in California. The dog, a German shepherd named Haakon, was a member of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and he had been partnered with Deputy Joshua Stillman for almost seven years.

On June 5, the Sheriff’s Office alerted Facebook followers that Haakon had suffered a health incident, possibly heat-related, during training:

Haakon collapsed at training today and we hope that it was just from the heat. Let’s share this post and comment with blue hearts, in hopes of a speedy recovery. 🐕💙

Later that evening, what seemed to be a positive update was shared on social media:

UPDATE!!

Haakon was released from the vet this evening and was able to walk in his home on his own. Doctor’s orders, he will be spending a few days resting with his family. Thank you for all the support. 💙🐕

But Haakon never recovered as those who knew him had hoped. The sad news was posted the day after Haakon’s collapse:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to announce that we lost one of our family earlier today with the passing of K9 Haakon this morning.

Adding:

K9 Haakon had over come any and all of the extreme and dangerous challenges a K9 can face and loved to spend time visiting countless local schools and children.

We would like to thank the public for their unwavering love and support and all of the heartfelt wishes. We would also like to thank our allied agencies and fellow K9 Units for their show of support in a private precession and remembrance of a True Hero.

K9 Haakon will always be remembered.
