At airports across the nation, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be phasing out pointy ear dogs such as German shepherds because they scare children.

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, TSA Administrator David Pekoske stated:

“We’ve made a conscious effort in TSA to use floppy ear dogs. We find the passenger acceptance of floppy ear dogs is just better. It presents just a little bit less of a concern. Doesn’t scare children.”

More than 80 percent of the dogs purchased in the last year have been Labrador retrievers, German short-haired pointers, wire haired pointers, Vizslas and golden retrievers. German shepherds and Belgian Malinois aren’t all rejected however. Much still has to do with the dogs’ abilities to detect odors, their socialization skills and of course their dispositions. Shepherds are more likely to be used in the baggage areas while the friendlier canine faces with the floppy ears are more often out with the public. According to the TSA publication, about 80 percent of the 1,200 dogs have droopy ears.

Many of these TSA dogs are retired every year. Interested in adopting one? Check out the website for more information.

  1. Well This Beats about anything I have ever heard… to me that is like saying “People of Color” scare Children… so we can’t have pilots of color, or stewards because this will traumatize Children from the Midwest!!

  2. Good lord, pointy ear dogs “scare” children. Well isn’t that too bad! The dogs are there to sniff out drugs, bombs and other contraband not to entertain the “children”. Just another way to discriminate!
