Poacher who killed 2 bull elk banned from hunting for 25 years

The Chinook, Montana man who illegally killed two bull elk in February from his pickup truck is serving a six-month sentence in the Valley County Detention Center. Cameron Dow Overcast is banned from hunting, fishing and trapping for the next 25 years.

According to KpaxNews,

On February 11,  the bodies of two elk were discovered in a field. One of the elk’s was a 7×7 bull elk and nearby was a 6×6 bull elk. The shooting occurred out of hunting season and on private property. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks asked for the public’s help finding the person responsible, calling the killings a “wanton waste of two bull elk.”

Authorities received information which led to the arrest of Overcast who was charged with seven counts: Waste of a Game Animal, Fish or Bird (2 counts) Hunting or fishing during closed season (2 counts) Failure to obtain landowner permission for hunting, Unlawful hunting from a public highway and hunting from a motor vehicle.

Overcast pleaded guilty to all seven counts and was sentenced to six months is jail with 90 days suspended for each charge. He was also fined $9,000 in addition to forfeiting his privileges to hunt, fish and trap for 25 years. In addition, Overcast was ordered to obtain a chemical dependency and mental health evaluation at his own expense and follow all recommended treatment.

  1. This is one of the more meaninful punishments I have seen for a poacher! I hope he learned something but they should have taken away his guns!

  2. He should have his license REVOKED forever!!! People in Montana are Pretty Damn UPFRONT with Being Good and Upfront with respect for the wildlife population… This was a total waste of 2 beautiful Elk that could have been taken to be processed for the families in need what a total Dick Weed this guy is… Jim Bridger he is NOT!
