The photos and a viral video of a dog chained outside during a storm provides a warning to everyone about the importance of providing proper shelter for pets.
The dog in the video had been tied to a log in Alabama where it had been abandoned for days until a rescue group found him. And now with hurricane season looming around the United States, it’s time to be reminded that pets can suffer dire consequences when left behind to fend for themselves.
Although hurricanes may only last a few hours, the recovery process can take days, weeks or even months. Homes are often left without power, water or other services. Have a plan in advance if told to evacuate your home. There are pet-friendly hotels, kennels or even placing Fido with a relative – just make plans in advance.
Make sure your pet is microchipped. This is considered the most effective form of identification, and a lost pet can be scanned and returned to you as long as your information is recorded and up to date.
Build a kit for your pet. Include the following:
- Food for at least three days in an airtight waterproof container
- Water for at least three days specifically for your pet
- Medicine and veterinary records
- Important documents
- First aid kit
- Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash
- Crate or pet carrier
This dog was rescued. Be the voice for those who cannot speak. If you see something, say something.
Some may believe that fostering is just “too hard,” but the pay off is incredible! Spread the word, you can survive fostering, and save a life in the process! This beautiful design reads, “I survived loving a foster dog until a furever home was found” #Youcantoo
