Perfect family dog to be euthanized tomorrow

A handsome dog, described as the “perfect” family dog, is scheduled to be euthanized tomorrow at a busy animal care center in New York. The dog, named Axel, lost his home after his owners surrendered him to the Manhattan Animal Care Center because they could no longer afford him.

Axel’s prior family left a great deal of information about their dog – noting that he was “very playful” around the child in the home, and friendly with other dogs. His family provided information on his intake form, writing that he is: “friendly with small dogs and will play with them very gently. He will lie down or roll over to play with them. He has gotten along with select large dogs and will bark at other large dogs. He is always more timid with them and will run away if he gets scared.

His family stated that he shows no signs of resource guarding, writing:

He allows owners to put their hands in his food and take toys and bones away.

Why then, is this perfect family pet about to be killed? Axel is distraught now that he is away from his family. He is distant from shelter staff workers and shows signs of stress. He is known to bark and growl at the strangers who approach his kennel run.

Because of his “concerning” behavior, Axel can only be rescued by one of the animal care center’s New Hope partners. If one is not found in time, Axel will be put down tomorrow.
