An old blind dog with dementia was rescued on Saturday after his owner had thrown the senior dog in the backyard where he wandered around until he fell into the mud and could not move for five days.
According to the rescue organization, Udruga Sapica Animal Association in Zapresic, Croatia, the dog who had been sleeping in the house until he ended up outside when a new baby arrived in the home. As the 15 to 20 year-old dog, named Beni, wandered aimlessly, on Tuesday, he fell into the mud. For five days the mud enveloped him – he had been buried alive for five days, and even though he called for help, no one ever came until Saturday when rescuers found him.
“He called help how much he had strength, but no one reacted until Saturday. 50 m from where he was found houses and six children played with the ball, and their parents unfortunately did not react. When 5 days you listen to an animal how and not regiraš, what’s left in you? Where did the humanity go? Why are we teaching kids?”, the shelter posted on their Facebook page.
Since having been rescued, Beni has been shaved to remove the maggots and to clean his wounds. He is eating well and wears a coat to keep him warm when he goes outside for a walk. The woman, who owned Beni has been found and surrendered the dog to the rescue. She has also agreed to pay for the dog’s veterinary costs.
It is not clear if the previous owner will be charged with animal cruelty, however social media pressure may very well push authorities to press charges.
“What kind of rubbish do you have to be to do such a thing?,” one person added.
