A recent social media post by Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, has sparked a great deal of outrage. On June 25, Sonko posted a video showing carcasses of dogs at a street market and wrote:

Soko ya Mbwa coming soon to Nairobi. We are in the process of identifying a market for stray dogs in Nairobi where we shall be recruiting and bringing together all the dog eating nationalities and open for them a koroga club where they’ll be buying slaughtered stray dogs ready for cooking or eating.

Nearly 2000 people have left comments…the majority expressing anger and dismay. One person wrote:

Mr. Sonko, are you out of your mind??? You are one sick individual. Dogs are our companion animals and not food. In addition, you will ruin Nigeria’s reputation.

And another,

Sir, how incredibly irresponsible your idea is to start a dog meat market. Please do your research and learn of the repercussions this will bring upon the people of your region. The ill effects of eating dog and being in the spotlight on the world stage. Shame on you sir.

Yet another writes:

Its completely and utterly ridiculous what you are saying! There are soo many campaigns happening across the world and even in Kenya to stop the dog meat trade during the Yulin festival and you are here proposing the same! Soo many people are protecting the rights of dogs and you intend to break each and every foundation built! Your priority now is to slaugter the closest animal to the human race with the intent of bringing ‘dog eating nationalities’ to kenya! Our main goal in life is to help and if you cannot help dogs at the very least do not hurt them!

And:

How dare you even consider this!!! Is this what Nairobi has become? This is most disturbing and disgusting proposal ever to be considered!!!

As reported by Tuko, there is a huge stray dog population in Nairobi. Leaders have been having the dogs rounded up to be killed in order to combat the issue, which has been described as a “risk” to the public.

  1. IS HE INSANE???!!! HOW ABOUT HELPING FIND HOMES FOR THE DOGS? WORLDWIDE ORGANiZATIONS WOULD HELP?

HOW ABOUT MEAT MARKETS FOR BRAINLESS HEARTLESS POLITICIANS?! THEY ARE THE ONES PUTTING THE PUBLIC AT RISK!

  2. Why can’t these poor strays be rounded up, spayed and neutered, then offered up as pets, guard dogs, herding dogs…..

Who knows what diseases they might carry (rabies, parvovirus, distemper…) you don’t want to “spread” these diseases into humans???

I think eating dog meat from “strays” is a terrible idea…….

  3. with this kind of mentality….kenya tutakuwa nyuma for too long……we need industries……as economic engines and employment………not dogs….
