There has been an outpouring of disgust as the video of a trophy hunter has surfaced, showing a man sneaking up on a sleeping lion and then shooting it. Where the video was taken nor the identity of the hunter has not been verified, however the guide, with a South African accent, refers to the trophy hunter as “Mr. Gooney.”

According to the Daily Mail, the video was posted on Twitter and shared by @Protect_Wldlife. No details were given about the incident, who was involved or where it took place, except for the reference to the hunter’s possible name.

“This ‘hunter’ sneaked up on a SLEEPING #Lion and killed it! How brave, how sporting – HOW C**TISH!!!”

Thousands of replies expressing pure hatred for the hunter’s act followed very quickly with demands for the man to be identified.  The hunter is shown aiming his rifle at the sleeping lion while another man seems to be coaching him to shoot. When the hunter fires off a shot, the lion awakens and arches his back in agony while turning around and momentarily trying to figure out what happened. Before the lion has a chance to get up, the hunter fires a second and a third shot. The guide tells him to stop shooting.

“OK, OK, don’t do anymore.”

At that point, the guide shakes the hand of the hunter telling him what a good job he had done then stating ” a very nice lion” while patting the hunter on the back.

As if that wasn’t cowardly enough, the video shows the guide poking the lion with the end of his rifle – making sure the gorgeous cat was dead. Then we hear the word “beautiful” as the camera takes a closeup of the dead lion’s face.

The World Wildlife Fund estimates the African lion population has decreased by more than 40 percent in the last 30 years due to loss of living space, conflicts with people and hunting. With only 20,000 left in the wild, they are classified as “vulnerable.” Still, wealthy trophy hunters, have nothing better to do.
