At the Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium located in Kingsport, Tennessee, an orphaned otter named Otto died after guests fed him human food his body could not tolerate. On Thursday, the planetarium posted on Facebook that Otto had been rushed to an animal hospital after park guests had thrown food into his enclosure, and his body was not able to tolerate the food.

“Otto the otter fell ill after park guests threw food into his enclosure that his body could not tolerate. We have no word on his condition as of right now.

As a reminder, feeding the animals at Bays Mountain Park is strictly prohibited for exactly this reason. Human food is often intolerable and, in this case, even harmful to our animals. Please follow all posted park rules, including the signs that say not to feed the animals.

The park will issue a follow-up statement as we learn more about Otto’s condition. Please keep Otto in your thoughts today.”

Later in the day, it was announced that Otto had died. A necrospy to determine the exact cause of death has been ordered.

Otto arrived at the park in October 2017 from North Carolina when he was nine-months-old. Most of his family had been lost in the flood except for Otto and a sibling. The intent was to release the two back into the wild, but the pups became too familiar with humans, and so Otto was relocated to the Bays Mountain Park.

Rest in peace little guy. Surely guests are smart enough not to feed animals their own junk food? Surely, we guess not!
