A baby giraffe, taken in by an orphanage in South Africa, passed away two days ago. The orphaned giraffe, dubbed Jazz, was befriended by a dog named Hunter and his canine companion was with him until he drew his last breath.

The heartbreaking news was released by The Rhino Orphanage on Thursday:

Our Team is heartbroken as we announce that our beautiful, brave boy, Jazz the giraffe, passed away. The last 2 days before we lost him, Jazz started looking unstable on his legs and very dull, almost like he wasn’t registering everything. He suddenly collapsed and we could see blood starting to pool back into his eyes.

Hunter could tell that something was wrong and refused to leave Jazz’s side. The orphanage explains:

His friend Hunter knew something was wrong as he suddenly stayed by the giraffe’s side again not going outside. Jazz took his last breath with Hunter and all his human mommies by his side.

A veterinarian determined why the baby giraffe passed away. The orphanage explains:

Jazz had hyphema (blood pooling in the eyes) coupled with brain heamorhaging which could be due to a genetic defect or under-developed valve system. He couldn’t regulate blood pressure to his brain and therefore bleeding between the ventricles occurred. All our efforts were in vain.

Though Jazz was “abandoned” by his mother, the orphanage now knows that she left because she intuitively knew that her baby was going to die.

Hunter stayed with Jazz for awhile and then sought out human companionship. His care providers believe that he will recover emotionally and that he will be able to continue training to become a tracking dog.

  1. Whilst it’s absolutely heartbreaking that this baby died, at least his death was peaceful and he knew he was loved.

Much better than dying alone and a horrible violent death by predators………
