A 30-year-old orangutan is blind after someone shot her dozens of times with an air gun. Because of her severe injuries, which left her unable to feed her baby, she is also childless. As reported by the Daily Mail, the primate, dubbed Hope, lost her baby to malnutrition and she is no longer able to see.
Hope was discovered on March 9 – curled up and peppered with wounds, in an Indonesia forest. On March 12, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) alerted Facebook followers about the severity of Hope’s injuries:
From the medical check, sadly we found 74 air riffle bullets on her body. The more heartbreaking it made her eyes damaged and totally blind. Some serious bone fracture also found in all hands and legs. According to our vet, ‘Hope” will need a long time care and recovery treatment.
The conservation agency also commented on the loss of Hope’s baby:
Unfortunately the baby took his last breath on the way to the quarantine center yesterday, due to serious traumatic and malnourished condition.
Hope is making strives towards recovery with the help of veterinary care. On March 15, the agency stated:
Three days under the care and monitoring of the SOCP Vet team, Orangutan ‘Hope’ looks in better condition. She is starting to eat some fruits and drink milk. But she’s still in the intensive care cages. SOCP Vet team is planning to conduct further medical treatment for her bone fracture soon.
