One year since Maximus’ owners divorced and sent him to shelter

Maximus will soon have been at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wanaugh, New York for a year. His owners were divorced, and neither one wanted Maximus, and he was quickly doomed to a life behind bars with more than 100 dogs at the shelter.

“For 5 years Maximus lived a pretty good life with his owners. But now this is what Maximus’ life is like. Almost 1 whole year living this way … It’s just not fair,” an animal advocate wrote on Facebook.

Unfortunately six-year-old Maximus had never been properly socialized with other dogs, and he needs to be the only dog in a home. He’s scared of the rain, which just breaks hearts a little more. Maximux is NOT reactive to other dogs; he just avoids them. In time with proper socialization and positive training reinforcement, he may be able to live with another low key dog, but for now being the only dog is the best guarantee of this boy’s success in a new family.

His attributes, however far outweigh his shortcomings:

  • He is good with teenagers and adults
  • He is house and crate trained
  • He is up-to-date with all vaccinations
  • He is microchipped
  • He knows ‘sit, down, and paw’ commands

  1. Since neither one of the original owners wanted Maximus, you can see what kind of an existence he had for the 5 years they had him. Now he can’t get along with other dogs so this limits his adaptability. Many of us who adopt from the shelters already have one or more dogs. I pray someone wants him and he finds a good home.

  2. I CANNOT COMPREHEND GIVING UP A DOG BECAUSE OF A DIVORCE!
I “CAN” IMAGINE A DIVORCE IN ORDER TO “KEEP” A DOG OR A LEGAL BATTLE FOR CUSTODY OF A DOG!

PLEASE HELP DARLING MAXIMUS FIND A HOME WITH SOMEONE “SANE” AND “LOVING”!
