In Lima, Ohio, a man drowned on Sunday while trying to save his dog from the swollen river. Investigators identified the man as Eric Nolte, 35; his body was found an hour after he went into the Ottawa River.

According to FoxNews, the fast moving current swept Nolte away. Another person who had been walking their own dog managed to pull Nolte’s dog out of the water. Heavy rains had left the water higher and more dangerous. Currents swept Nolte more than a mile downstream.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created by his friend to help Nolte’s family pay for funeral expenses.

“I hadn’t seen Eric in some time, but memories are swirling of the stupid stuff that made us laugh back in early 2000..He was a great guy with an awesome laugh and smile that would brighten a room or anyone’s day.

Thanks Everyone,

Matt (02 Forever!!)”

Rest in peace Eric.
